Our Journey

When HER Fund was working with different gender organisations, we observed that leaders from the organisations often encountered challenges while advancing gender equity. Not only did they face discrimination because of their gender or sexual orientation, but they also experienced burnout due to a few reasons: how the society lost focus on gender-related issues, lack of resources, team communication, etc., negatively affecting the operation of the organisation.

We cannot help but reflect: what kind of leadership can lead us to develop a more diverse and inclusive society? When the patriarchal society is in pursuit of quick and immediate results, as well as overly proclaiming excellence, decisiveness, patience, authority and etc. as leadership, can we offer an alternative that emphasises the uniqueness, feelings, needs and connection between individuals?

In view of this, we have started our work of promoting transformative feminist leadership since 2019. Together with organisation leaders advancing gender equity, we embarked on a journey of self-awareness and nurturing their inner strength. We encourage ourselves to practice resilience in our everyday life and when we are involved in our organisational work despite the challenges ahead, leading the organisation to move forward for the better.

What is Transformative Feminist Leadership (TFL)?

The vision of Transformative Feminist Leadership (TFL) is to develop a diverse and inclusive society for individuals and communities through gender equity movements. If we want to achieve gender equity in a changing society, we will need leadership strength to pioneer new ground TFL believes that changes start from one self , emphasising how everyone is inseparable from society, and individuals can drive social change through self-transformation.

This is not a theory on how to become a traditional leader, but rather it emphasizes on the inner strength of every individual, believing that everyone has unique skills and resources, and can even contribute to others and become a leader in the organization. We hope to provide space and opportunities, accompany fellow travellers who pursue gender equity to transform themselves, and live out their beliefs and values.
